Know Someone Who’d Make a Great Co-Worker?

Posted: 07/28/2025
The old adage is true: One of the best ways to hire good people is to ask your co-workers for referrals.

Right now, there are 18 entry-level job openings in the Public Service Department – and the City offers a ton of incentives.

Know someone who’s looking for opportunities to advance – and maybe also has a desire to make Knoxville greener, cleaner, and better?

City employees, reach out to that person – and ask him or her go to the City of Knoxville’s job postings webpage to apply: www.KnoxvilleTN.gov/jobs

Public Service is looking for employees who care about Knoxville and want to advance themselves and start a new career.

Why join the Public Service team?

“Besides the pay and benefits, we offer a team atmosphere, supportive managers and energetic co-workers,” says Public Service Deputy Director Chris Webster.

“Some people come to us because they’ve experienced seasonal layoffs, and they want long-term security. Some are looking to better themselves, or they want to better their community.

“We offer training and incentives. Nothing is needed except a positive attitude.”

The list of incentives and perks is long:

Pay and training

Starting entry-level pay – about $18 an hour

The City pays for employees to earn a Class A Commercial Driver License – valued at $5,000 to $10,000

Within a year, employees earn their CDL, and their pay increases to $19 an hour

Paid vacation time off and 11 paid holidays

City pensions and longevity bonuses for longer-term employees

Predictable hours

40-hour work weeks – with weekends off, for most employees

Shifts start early and end by mid-afternoon – great for parents wanting to pick up their children at school, share family dinners, attend evening school or church programs!

Clothes and shoes

$330 a year clothing allotment

Safety-toed shoes, valued at $200, provided annually
