Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch presented the Life Saving Award to Knoxville Police Department Officer James Williams.
Officer Williams has been with KPD since November 2003.
On November 30, 2017, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Officer Williams responded to Central Street near Woodland Avenue where he discovered an unconscious male behind the wheel of a vehicle. Officer Williams immediately administered a dose of Naloxone and attempted to wake the male up with sternum rubs, but the victim did not respond. After not finding a pulse Officer Williams removed the male from the vehicle and immediately began administering CPR. Williams continued with his life-saving efforts for several minutes until AMR Medics and KFD arrived and deployed their LUCAS chest compression system. Ultimately, a pulse was recovered and the patient was transported to a local hospital. According to AMR EMTs and medical staff at the hospital, without Officer Williams’ quick administration of Naloxone and CPR, the victim would have died.
Chief Rausch said, “Officer Williams’ ability to recognize a potentially fatal medical condition led him to act quickly to administer life-saving techniques that ultimately saved a life. We thank you for your dedication to this department and to the citizens you serve.”
