Public Meeting Scheduled as the City Moves Forward with Plans to Rebuild Fort Kid

Posted: 02/19/2020
The City of Knoxville is moving forward with improvement plans for Fort Kid. The City is committed to stabilizing the site, improving accessibility and making it a place for even more families to enjoy for generations to come.

As the process moves forward, the City wants to rebuild in the true spirit of Fort Kid. That is why a public meeting has been scheduled on Thursday, March 12, 2020 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Museum of Art. This meeting will serve as a way to update residents on the future of the park and to, most importantly, get feedback about their memories of the site, what they like about the current play facilities and what they would like to see in a future Fort Kid.

“I am a huge supporter of our local parks and Fort Kid has been an asset in our community,” Mayor Indya Kincannon said. “My family has treasured photos of our children at Fort Kid and I want to ensure that future generations have the same opportunity to make memories in that same location. It is unfortunate that the current structure must be dismantled, but we are committed to rebuilding and enhancing connectivity to the neighboring Knoxville Museum of Art.”

In order to start the process, Fort Kid is scheduled to close March 23, 2020.  The City of Knoxville will continue to seek public input before a final design is in place.  The City anticipates re-opening the park by the end of this year.
