North Central Street Project Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Dec. 18, 2019

Posted: 12/17/2019
The $6.35 million North Central Street Project is nearing completion with the landscape installation almost complete.

Mayor Rogero, City Council members, City staff, TDOT staff, representatives of the project team and neighborhood stakeholders will cut a ribbon to celebrate on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019 at 11 a.m. near the intersection of Baxter Avenue at Central Street.

The project covers 13 blocks and includes 43,000 square feet of new green space in addition to major infrastructure improvements with water mains, fire hydrants, and increased multi-modal function, making it friendly to pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, as well as drivers.

The City’s project includes replacing deteriorating storm water lines, repairing and replacing damaged sidewalks, installing new bulb-outs to define on-street parking and provide areas for landscaping, better-marked bike lanes, resurfacing the street, and creating a linear park near Baxter Avenue.

The upgraded area runs from Depot Avenue on the south end of the project through the intersection at Broadway and north to Woodland Avenue, approximately 1.1 miles.

Prior to the City’s construction, Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) replaced more than 8,000 linear feet of water main and 26 fire hydrants.
