Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch today awarded the department’s Lifesaving Award to Knoxville Police Department Officer Chip Braeuner. Officer Braeuner has been with KPD since January 1994.
On December 23, 2016, Officer Braeuner and fellow Officer Jim Quick were having lunch when Officer Quick suddenly suffered a medical emergency when food became lodged in his throat completely blocking his airway. Officer Quick could not clear the obstruction on his own.
Officer Braeuner, recognizing the situation and without hesitation, performed the Heimlich Maneuver on Officer Quick, which dislodged the airway blockage and allowed Officer Quick to breathe again.
Officer Braeuner’s quick thinking, calm reasoning and actions, saved the life of a fellow officer. Congratulations on a job well done.
