Marathon Boasts Record 8,700 Participants, Includes 26.2 Miles of Rolling Street Closures

www.knoxvillemarathon.comSunday morning’s Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is the biggest in its 13 years, with a record number – about 8,700 – runners participating in six race events throughout this weekend.

The 1-mile Kids Run starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, followed by the 5K (3.1 miles) at 7 p.m. The full 26.2-mile and half marathon (13.1 miles) and relays start at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, April 2. All race events start at the Clinch Avenue Viaduct in front of the main entrance to the Knoxville Convention Center.

To accommodate East Tennessee’s largest competitive road race, motorists should anticipate some temporary no-parking zones and rolling street closures along the 26.2-mile route on Sunday morning.

Clinch Avenue between Henley and 11th streets will be closed, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1. The street will reopen at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2. A temporary no-parking zone on Clinch Avenue will be start at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Once the Marathon kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on the Clinch Avenue Viaduct, there will be rolling closures along the route. Motorists should plan ahead and consider alternate routes.

The rolling closures will follow this route being taken by the runners:

• World’s Fair Park Drive: Closed from start of the race until the half marathon passes from 11th Street; then, the closure will move to south of the Knoxville Museum of Art parking lot; closed at north end by Fort Kid;
• Clinch Avenue: Closed at start of Marathon, 5K and Covenant Kids Run from 11th Street to 16th Street;
• 16th Street: Closed at start of Marathon, 5K and Covenant Kids Run from Clinch Avenue to Cumberland Avenue;
• Volunteer Boulevard: Eastbound lanes closed for Marathon and 5K to UT Drive on the west end;
• Lake Loudon Boulevard: Southbound lanes from Volunteer Boulevard to Neyland Drive closed for Marathon;
• Neyland Drive: Eastbound lanes closed for Marathon from Lake Loudon Boulevard to Kingston Pike;
• Kingston Pike: Eastbound lanes closed; two-way traffic in westbound lanes;
• Cherokee Boulevard: Southbound lanes closed;
• Blows Ferry Road: Westbound lanes closed;
• Alta Vista Way: Northbound lane closed;
• Noelton Drive: Right lane closed from Alta Vista to Kingston Pike;
• Kingston Pike: Right lane closed westbound from Noelton to Forest Park Boulevard;
• Forest Park Boulevard: Northbound right lane closed from Kingston Pike to Newcom Avenue;
• Newcom Avenue: Closed both ends from Forest Park to Lebanon Street;
• Lebanon Street: Closed from Sutherland to Newcom avenues;
• Tyson Park: Closed at Kingston Pike entrance and at “road closed” sign inside the park at U.S. 129 overpass;
• Cumberland Avenue: Right westbound curbside lane closed from 22nd Street to Tyson Park; south curb eastbound from Phil Fulmer Way to Estabrook Drive;
• 22nd Street: Full closure from Forest Avenue to Cumberland Avenue;
• Forest Avenue: Full closure from 17th Street to 22nd Street; continued closure from 17th Street east to 13th Street;
• Highland Avenue: Eastbound lanes closed from 11th to 13th streets;
• Broadway: Right lane closed from World’s Fair Park Drive to Central Street;
• Central Street: Southbound right lane closed from Broadway to Third Avenue; northbound right lane closed from Magnolia Avenue to Fourth Avenue; southbound lane closed from Jackson to Cumberland avenues at South Central Street;
• Winona Street: Northbound lanes closed form Magnolia to Woodbine avenues;
• Woodbine Avenue: Closed both ends from Winona to Bertrand Street; local traffic only; 
• Patton Street: “Road closed” signs on both ends between Jackson and Willow streets;
• Jackson Avenue: Eastbound lane closed from Patton to Central;
• State Street: East curb closed in right northbound lane to allow runners a lane behind cones;
• Hill Avenue: Closed eastbound to James White Parkway southbound entrance ramp, starting at Gay Street;
• Sevier Avenue: Right lane closed from James White Parkway to Island Home Avenue; cones 6-8 feet from westbound curb for runners’ lane from Island Home Avenue to Gay Street;
• Island Home Avenue: Closed from Sevier Avenue to Maplewood Drive; westbound traffic will be detoured onto Hillwood Drive;
• Gay Street: Both Northbound Lanes of Gay Street between Blount Ave and Summit Hill will be closed from 8:30am-2:00pm and there will be Temporary No Parking in the Northbound Lane of Gay Street starting at 6:00am Sunday;
• Market Street: Closed from Union to Church avenues;
• Church Avenue: Westbound right lane closed from Market to Locust streets; and
• Estabrook Drive: Closed from Cumberland Avenue to the Gate 25 entrance of Neyland Stadium and the finish line on the 50 yard line.
