Look for a major milestone this month with the Sevier Avenue Streetscapes Project, as work begins for the first time on the corridor's western end.
Within the next few weeks, the work near the Davenport Road intersection also will require for the first time some traffic shifts and a lane closure on Sevier Avenue. At all times, at least one lane will remain open, and flaggers will be directing traffic.
Anticipate short delays when eastbound and westbound motorists will be taking turns sharing the lane.
Southern Constructors crews will be installing conduit, duct banks and manholes on the north side of Sevier Avenue. They will start at Davenport Road and work their way eastward.
These buried 6-inch plastic pipes eventually will house electric and fiber lines, as utilities will be relocated below ground along Sevier Avenue.
The relocation serves two purposes: It's aesthetically an upgrade, reducing the clutter of utility lines and poles. But below-ground utilities are also more reliable; freezing rain and snow are less likely to cause outages if lines aren't strung along poles.
By design, this part of the streetscapes work was scheduled to be done during the summer. Traffic is lighter now because there are no regular classes during the summer at nearby South Knoxville Elementary School.
Pictured here, conduit is being installed on Foggy Bottom Street. Starting soon, duct banks and conduit work is coming to Sevier Avenue near Davenport Road.
Also happening along the corridor:
- Southern Constructors crews will be continuing their installation of conduit on Foggy Bottom Street, and a concrete transformer pad will be poured on Phillips Avenue.
- Whaley Construction crews will begin the installation of a stormwater box culvert where Foggy Bottom, Sevier and Island Home Avenue intersect.
