This week, anticipate a minor milestone in the Sevier Avenue Streetscape Project: Foggy Bottom Street is reopening, and new lane shifts at the Sevier-Foggy Bottom-Island Home Avenue intersection will be a prelude to construction of the roundabout.
Foggy Bottom has been closed since March, as Whaley Construction crews installed duct banks, storm sewers, drainage infrastructure and sidewalks. Crews also have been bringing in and placing soil to raise the roadbed by 6 feet or so at the location of the future roundabout.
This week, with Foggy Bottom reopening, both lanes of Island Home will shift northward. This will straighten the alignment of Sevier and Island Home, but it also creates space to continue work installing a box culvert and bringing the rest of the roadbed up to grade.
Look for work to begin early next year on the actual roundabout, which is designed to more efficiently and safely move vehicles and pedestrians through what's always been an unconventional, misaligned intersection.
