Third Creek Greenway Bridge to be Repaired

Posted: 01/29/2026
The iconic and well-traveled Third Creek Greenway Zig Zag Bridge is getting a major makeover.

This section of the greenway will be closed to pedestrians, scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 2. The worn and slick-when-wet wooden decking is being removed. The repaired bridge will reopen in about a month with new wooden boards and safety treads, which will provide greater traction and reduce slipping.

Third Creek Greenway is a popular through route for bicyclists commuting from West Knoxville to downtown or the University of Tennessee and back. The bicycle detour will follow Painter Avenue while the Zig Zag Bridge section is closed.

For all users, Third Creek Greenway will remain open from the Painter Avenue access west to Bearden and from Tyson Park to the UT campus during this repair closure. Greenway access to Safety City will also remain open during this time.

Just as with the repairs currently underway on the James White Greenway, the work on the Zig Zag Bridge section of Third Creek Greenway is being done in-house by the City’s Public Service Department. And as with the James White Greenway work, the Third Creek Greenway repairs are intentionally being done now, during the winter season, when fewer people are using the greenways.
