For four consecutive weekends, starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, the Tennessee Department of Transportation's repairs to the James White Parkway bridges next to Covenant Health Park will close parts of the parkway.



The schedule is weather dependent; TDOT's work could get rescheduled if there's rain.

At various times throughout August, the state's bridge work also will affect the Old City parking lots beneath the parkway.

Here's the TDOT announcement of the James White Parkway closures, along with the state's recommended detours.
 
Depending on whether it's dry or rainy this week, the state hopes to be getting started and closing southbound James White Parkway downtown Aug. 7-10 and Aug. 14-17 and northbound JWP downtown Aug. 21-24 and Aug. 28-31.

Note: The James White Parkway bridges over the Tennessee River are NOT impacted by the closure. 

Downtown visitors using I-40 can exit at Hall of Fame Drive to reach the Old City and all of downtown. Visitors using I-275 may need to use the Henley Street exit at times.

Traveling from South Knoxville to downtown? Take James White Parkway and exit at Hill Avenue; from there, you can reach downtown and the interstate from Hall of Fame Drive.

As the bridge work progresses, state workers and their equipment will be sharing the Old City South Lot with the public. Limited ADA accessible parking and permit parking will continue, but for about a 3-week stretch, starting soon, the lot will be closed to hourly parking.

Alternatives parking locations: 

Catch a free ride from almost anywhere downtown on KAT's Downtown Connector. The bus picks up every 15 minutes and drops passengers both in the Old City and at Covenant Health Park.

Or: Park in the City's State Street Garage or the Old City lot on West Jackson Avenue -- both are about a 10-minute walk to the stadium, and both are free on nights and weekends. (Market Square and Langley garages are a little further away but still convenient.)
