Creating a cleaner, more sustainable Knoxville takes committed partners, and Green Heron Compost Services is helping lead the way. As the City works to expand its food waste diversion and composting efforts, Green Heron has emerged as a critical collaborator in turning yesterday’s scraps into tomorrow’s soil.
Thanks to a growing network of food scrap drop-off centers, residents can now participate in reducing landfill waste and returning nutrients to the land. But getting those scraps where they need to go and turning them into nutrient-rich compost is where Green Heron steps in.
Green Heron collects organic waste from City drop-off points and delivers it to local partner farms. There, it’s transformed into compost used to nourish garden beds that grow food for Knoxville families. A full-circle model that supports both environmental health and food security.
Their work directly supports Knoxville’s climate goals by reducing methane emissions from landfills, building healthy soil, and helping residents take meaningful action on waste.
As we continue working toward a clean, resilient future, the City is grateful for Green Heron’s partnership.
