The African American Equity Restoration Task Force (AAERTF) studies, reviews, and identifies strategic solutions to improve areas of disparity and disenfranchisement in the East Knoxville community by working with existing community agencies to develop policy and program recommendations that will create opportunities for generational wealth building.

The City of Knoxville and African American Equity Restoration Task Force seek to provide grant funding to non-profit and community-based organizations capable of implementing efforts in East Knoxville in the Strategic Focus Areas of Education, Community Investment & Engagement, Homeownership, Small Business Development & Entrepreneurship, and Workforce Equity through the Spring, Summer, and/or Fall of 2026.

Grant funding will be awarded in March 2026 for programming carried out between March 2026 and November 2026. Awards will be in the amounts of either $10,000 or $20,000 and shall specifically support programming, stipends, payment, or other services directly related to the Investment Areas.

A post-project report of the programs or activities administered, the number and demographics of individuals served, and the impact of programming must be submitted at the end of the grant cycle.

Our grant evaluation process looks at the overall strength and thoughtfulness of each proposal. Reviewers consider how well the project is planned, whether it realistically fits within the organization’s capacity, and how clearly it aligns with both community needs in East Knoxville and AAERTF’s mission. We also look at the potential impact a project may have, the organization’s ability to manage funds and reporting, the soundness of financial and administrative practices, and the overall feasibility of delivering meaningful results. Strong applications are those that demonstrate clarity, accountability, and a realistic vision for making a positive difference.

This is a competitive process, and some applications may be partially funded or not funded at all. Additionally, previously receiving funding from the Community Safety and Empowerment Department offices does not guarantee selection for funding this cycle.

Applications must be received by December 3, 2025 before 4:30 p.m.
