Third Creek Greenway Project Leads to Temporary Closures

Posted: 10/26/2023
Third Creek Greenway–the City’s first greenway and a much-used public thoroughfare for commuters, walkers and cyclists–is getting a major makeover that has closed part of the greenway for the next few weeks.

In July 2023, City Council approved a contract with APAC Atlantic, Inc. of Knoxville for $331,923.75 to complete the project, which includes resurfacing approximately 7,575 linear feet of the greenway from S. Concord Street to Sutherland Avenue.

Third Creek Greenway extends 5.3 miles, connecting multiple neighborhoods and types of terrain between Bearden, downtown and the University of Tennessee campus. Built in 1973, it was the first greenway in the City’s now 112.5-mile greenway system.

In its 50 years, Third Creek has experienced standard wear and tear. Heavy rains and flooding, as well as erosion and plant growth, have contributed to numerous issues.

Parks and Greenways Coordinator Tim Hester points to the growth of tree roots and drainage issues, which has caused the paved path to buckle in many locations. The unevenness of the pathway serves as a potential obstacle to greenway users.

“We need to take care of our first greenway,” Hester said. “I look forward to additional updates to Third Creek and other greenways in the future.”

Tobler Lane to the Sutherland Avenue access is expected to reopen by Oct. 28. This closure allowed for a major renovation of the bridge over Third Creek near the railroad underpass.

The actual length of construction and the greenway closure depends on the weather.

The greenway will be closed from the railroad underpass near Sutherland Avenue to S. Concord Street–weather permitting–approximately 40 days. Rain and cold temperatures that are common in November may affect progress.

Third Creek Greenway remains open between Tyson Park and Neyland Greenway.

The City will provide updates on the closures via City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Facebook page at  https://www.facebook.com/KnoxvilleRecreation.
