Local Hazard Mitigation Plan Gets Annual Update

Posted: 09/24/2014
September 24, 2014 - To reduce or eliminate the long-term risks of natural hazards, such as flooding, the City of Knoxville, Knox County and the Town of Farragut developed a Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan in 2011.

The City was required to help create the plan due to the number of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) repetitive flood insurance claims made within the Knoxville community. This plan was approved by City Council on May 1, 2012.

As part of that plan, and to maintain flood insurance availability for its citizens, the City of Knoxville is required to update this plan annually.

The Local Hazard Mitigation Plan was updated in September 2013 and again now in September 2014.

The changes made to the plan were recommendations made by the Flood Management Planning Committee on Sept. 9, 2014.

The general changes made to the plan:

Updating the status or description of current or completed projects Updating the members of the Flood Management Committee, reflecting where members have had a change in employment and are no longer available General "housekeeping" - changes in spelling and grammar and adding clarifications where needed Changing the Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) rating for the City from a 4/99 to a 4/4

The Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan replaces the Flood Management Plan, completed in 2005, which is a requirement for the City of Knoxville. The Local Hazard Mitigation Plan also gives Knoxville eligibility for FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance Grant programs.
