Roadwork Planned This Weekend on Summit Hill Drive

Posted: 09/27/2012
City of Knoxville contractors will be paving Summit Hill Drive from Henley Street to South Central Street this weekend, along with some side streets. The project will be the first in the city to use a new paving mix including recycled shingles.

Paving operations are scheduled to begin the evening of Friday, Sept.28th. Weather permitting, it is anticipated this work will be complete by the evening of Sunday, Sept. 30th. Lanes will be closed on a rotating basis, and through traffic will be maintained throughout.

The streets scheduled to be resurfaced are:

West Summit Hill Drive from Henley Street to South Central Street; Cafego Place from Locust Street to Walnut Street; Locust Street from West Vine Avenue to South End; Walnut Street from West Vine Avenue to West Summit Hill Drive.

Work will begin at 6 p.m. Friday on the side streets and move onto West Summit Hill after 8 p.m.

This paving work is unique in that the City of Knoxville has selected it as a test project for using recycled shingles in the asphalt mix. In 2011, the Tennessee Department of Transportation completed a successful test project using recycled shingles on State Route 62 in Morgan County.

Potential benefits of using recycled shingles include decreased amounts of virgin asphalt required to produce the mix, increased stiffness of the roadway pavement, decreased susceptibility to rutting and a positive use for roof shingle waste and manufacturing shingle scrap. Visually, there should be no change in the appearance of the asphalt.
