City Council Recognizes Knoxville-Knox Co. AmeriCorps Members

Posted: 04/09/2010
Three members of the Knoxville-Knox County AmeriCorps were recognized at City Council this week for their outstanding service to the community during their service this past year.

Lauren Bailey, Jarius Bush and James Moses were introduced by Councilman Chris Woodhull.

Bailey, a Carson-Newman College graduate, worked with more than 700 volunteers at the Beardsley Community Farm in 2009. She also coordinated the CAC's Emergency Food Helpers which assisted more than 30 food pantries obtain food and monetary resources through the Hunger Hike and Filling Empty Bags.

Since last June Bush and Moses have conducted more than 570 home energy audits for the CAC's Weatherization Program which serves low and moderate income residents of the city. The audits provided information that contractors used to install insulation, caulking and other energy saving features in those homes that helped hundreds of families and senior citizens save money on energy and stay warm this winter.

John Harris, who directs the CAC's AmeriCorps program, said that the two men not only helped low income homeowners save money on energy costs, they also helped clients to understand the process and listened to their other needs.

Moses and Bush will be returning to college when their service with the AmeriCorps Program ends later this month.

Harris said all three had the skills that employers want but chose to serve with AmeriCorps because they wanted to help the community.

"Thank you is not a great enough statement for the services you provided," he said during the meeting. "Whether you helped a person stay in their home or helped to feed the hungry you did good work and never complained or become frustrated with the difficult work which would not have been done otherwise."
