Zoo's Yucky Exhibit Leaving Soon

Posted: 08/28/2005
Animal Grossology has been one of the best reasons to visit Knoxville Zoo this summer. But time is running out to see the zoo's yuckiest exhibit ever. The zoo is cleaning up the mess and sending it away on Sept. 5.

Animal Grossology is disgusting, full of slime, blood and vomit, but kids have loved this popular exhibit based on the best-selling book by Sylvia Branzei.

Grossology gives visitors a fun and educational look at the repulsive part of nature at work through games and other interactive exhibits. Visitors have enjoyed playing Dung Ball Rally against each other, cruising in the submarine or learning some of the fun facts throughout the exhibit.

Animal Grossology is located in the air-conditioned Pilot Traveling Exhibit Center. Grossology admission is $2 for ages 3 and up with paid zoo admission. Admission is free for Knoxville Zoo members. Also coming to a close in the next month are several daily presentations and shows. Each has been designed to provide a better understanding of animals and their lives.

The zoo offers several Encounter programs at popular animal exhibits. These programs are led by Knoxville Zoo interpreters using biofacts and interactive activities to educate and interest visitors. In addition to Encounter presentations, the zoo has Zoo Chats with keepers. During these chats, keepers provide insightful information about the animals they care for. The high-flying fun of the Bird Show along with the world-famous African grey parrot, Einstein, is getting ready for its winter migration. After Monday, Sept. 5, bird shows will only be on the weekends through October before taking off to begin preparing and training for next season. Some shows, encounters and chats may be extended into the Fall. Times and locations of shows and presentations are posted in the front plaza.

Knoxville Zoo is located off exit 392 from Interstate 40 and is open every day except Christmas Day. The zoo is nationally accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Currently, the zoo is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and ticket sales stop one hour before the zoo closes. For more information, please call 865.637.5331 ext. 300.
