Rededication of Buck Karnes Bridge Notes Medal of Honor

Posted: 08/19/2013
On Monday, Mayor Rogero attended the rededication of the J.E. "Buck" Karnes Bridge on Alcoa Highway. The state has installed new signs on the bridge recognizing that Karnes, a Knoxville native, received the Medal of Honor for his bravery during World War I.

After the war, Karnes returned to Knoxville and served for decades as an officer with the Knoxville Police Department.

Also attending the ceremony were City Council members Marshall Stair, Finbarr Saunders and Nick Della Volpe; KPD Chief David Rausch; County Mayor Tim Burchett and County Commissioner Ed Shouse; state Sen. Becky Duncan Massey; and Joe Thompson and Chris Coyne, co-chairs of the host committee for the Knoxville Medal of Honor Convention.

The Knoxville Medal of Honor Convention will be held in Knoxville in September 2014. For more information, see www.mohknoxville.com.
