Investigation Underway After Two Shot at Lay Avenue Home 
Victims Identified from Lay Avenue Shooting (December 9, 2022, 11:30 a.m.)

The victims from the shooting that occurred in the 2700 block of Lay Avenue on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 have been identified as Demetrius Bomar, 40 of Knoxville, and Lamar Harshaw, 30 of Knoxville. Bomar was pronounced dead at the UT Medical Center, while Harshaw remains hospitalized.  

The investigation, which is being led by the Knoxville Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, has determined that the incident began when Harshaw was confronted by two unknown Black males at a home on Lansing Avenue in what appeared to be a targeted attempted robbery. The attempted robbery continued to the home on Lay Avenue, where both Bomar and Harshaw were shot by the two suspects, who then fled the scene.   

Bomar and Harshaw drove from the scene in their respective cars before stopping at the intersection of Brooks and Biddle, where responding officers located them and provided aid.  

Efforts continue to identify the two suspects from the robbery and subsequent shooting.

At around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a home in the 2700 block of Lay Avenue on the report of a shooting with a victim. 

While in route to the location of the original call, responding officers were flagged down by two different cars with gunshot victims inside at the intersection of Biddle Street and Brooks Avenue. It was determined that both victims had fled from the home on Lay Avenue. 

The two victims, both adult men, were transported to the UT Medical Center. One victim was pronounced dead at UTMC, while the other remains in critical condition. 

The suspects were described as two Black males with thin builds. 

The circumstances that led to shooting remain under investigation. The investigation is in the early stages at this time. Additional information will be made available as the investigation progresses.
