KPD Acquires DUI Checkpoint Trailer Through Tennessee Highway Safety Office Grant
The Knoxville Police Department recently acquired a DUI checkpoint trailer to enhance its enforcement and public education efforts to discourage drivers from operating a car while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.

“Intoxicated drivers make the roads significantly more dangerous, and we have a responsibility as a department to be active in our enforcement efforts and public messaging about the real dangers of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” Chief of Police Paul Noel said. “This trailer gives us another resource to amplify that message and our enforcement capabilities.”

The trailer and customized wrap were two of the capital purchases made through the $200,000 Tennessee Highway Safety Office 2021/22 Police Traffic Services grant that was awarded to the KPD. The purchase was made at no expense to City of Knoxville taxpayers.

THSO is tasked with developing and implementing safety programs that address the behavioral factors that impact safety on the road. The focus of the Police Traffic Services program is impaired driving, occupant protection, work zone safety, speed violations, and distracted and aggressive drivers. All of these require sustained and consistent enforcement as well as participation in national mobilizations, network meetings and training.

The KPD’s new trailer will be used for future DUI checkpoints and as a static display at events around the City of Knoxville to educate drivers of the dangers of driving while under the influence. Prior to conducting DUI checkpoints, two current DUI instructors will attend training regarding the legal requirements and best practices for executing checkpoints. That training is scheduled for the fall of 2022. Additionally, prior to a checkpoint, the KPD will inform the public of the time, day and location of any checkpoint ahead of time as required by law.
