Update on Shooting at 1100 Vermont Avenue

The deceased from the shooting that occurred at 1100 Vermont Avenue on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 has been identified as Alexander Skelton, 31 of Knoxville, Tennessee.

At around 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, KPD officers responded to 1100 Vermont Avenue, where Skelton was located inside of the residence suffering from at least one gunshot would. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by responding EMS personnel. Numerous individuals were on scene upon officer arrival, and those individuals were transported to the Public Safety Building for further investigation.

Based on that investigation, it is believed that Mr. Skelton had entered the residence and demanded money while brandishing a firearm. He was then shot by one of the residents, who remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

No charges have been filed at this stage of the investigation, which remains ongoing. Upon the completion of the investigation, which is being conducted by the KPD Violent Crimes Unit, the file will be turned over to the Knox County District Attorney’s Office to make a determination regarding prosecution.
