Incident at Cherokee Country Club
At 4:13 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, Knoxville Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Broome Road for an aggravated assault. Upon arrival, officers were informed that a male subject allegedly stole a female victim’s handgun, pointed it at her and fled the scene in a gray sedan prior to officers arriving on scene.

Shortly after, the suspect vehicle was located by officers near the intersection of Lyons View Pike and Colony Street. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop and the vehicle fled. After the vehicle fled, a search of the area located the vehicle abandoned on Cherokee Country Club. Following further search of the surrounding area, the male suspect was located inside of a railcar on the railroad tracks adjacent to Cherokee Country Club.

Officers observed the suspect with a firearm threatening to shoot himself inside of the railcar, and KPD negotiators and the Special Operations Squad (SOS) were called to the scene.

The suspect eventually made his way out of the railcar and onto Cherokee Country Club. As SOS officers and a K-9 unit attempted to take the suspect into custody, the suspect shot himself in the chest. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators with the Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene to begin their investigation, while the body was transported to the Regional Forensic Center for a complete autopsy. The investigation is proceeding.
