Bird's Eye View: Suttree Landing Park
Aerial view of Suttree Landing Park

Check out this great aerial photo of Suttree Landing Park, the City's first new park to open in 12 years!

Many thanks to Bob Lusby, registered land surveyor with Cannon and Cannon Inc., for snapping this photograph. Cannon and Cannon served as the design consultant for the park project and administered and inspected the construction.

Suttree Landing Park is an 8¼-acre linear park within Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness that boasts festival lawns, a children’s playground, a put-in for kayakers, accessible river overlooks with picnic tables, and a public riverwalk. It opened last November.

Complementing the park is Waterfront Drive, a new 2,988-foot-long two-lane streetscape with sidewalks, trees and landscaping, and LED road and pedestrian lighting. Specially-designed engineering features – like bioswales and pervious concrete pavement – make sure the runoff that reaches the Tennessee River is clean water.

Design and Construction Services Inc. was the City's general contractor for the park project, and Blalock and Sons was the general contractor for Waterfront Drive.

There's a lot happening along the South Waterfront. Possibly by the end of 2017, Regal Entertainment Group will be relocating to its new headquarters at the foot of the Gay Street Bridge, and the Riverwalk at the Bridges apartments are tentatively scheduled to open in about a year. New businesses are opening along Sevier Avenue, including Honeybee Coffee Co., which launched last week.

In addition to Suttree Landing Park and the supporting public infrastructure - a $6.6 million total public investment - more than $160 million in private investment has been committed to the South Waterfront commercial corridor along Blount, Sevier and Island Home avenues.

So stay tuned: In about another year, we'll need to shoot another round of aerial photos to show all the new redevelopment projects!
