Catch a Catfish at Fountain ...
Catch a Catfish at Fountain City Park
It's a little bit historic and a whole lotta fun: Fishing for catfish specially stocked at Fountain City Lake!
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency last night (April 12, 2022) stocked 300 channel catfish in the iconic North Knoxville gathering spot, and community fishing there is an option starting today.
Each catfish weighs between 3/4 and 2 pounds, and anyone with a valid Tennessee fishing license can catch and keep five catfish a day.
This past winter, TWRA was offering winter trout fishing at Fountain City Park - the fourth year it's been offered. That's a testament to the years of hard work by community advocates and City stormwater engineers to improve the lake’s water quality, aerate the water, control algae, plant wetlands and remove invasive plant species at the natural spring-fed lake.
However, while TWRA stocked catfish at the lake in the summer of 2020, this is the first time that the Georgia farm-raised catfish are being stocked regularly on a monthly basis, April through June.
TWRA's community fishing program is aimed at introducing a love of fishing to families in urban areas who don’t necessarily have easy access to fishing holes. Anglers need the appropriate license, and they should bring their own rods, reels and bait.
"We are happy to stock Fountain City Lake and provide an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to go fishing close to home," says Sally Petre, TWRA Streams and Rivers Biologist. "This is a great place for those who have never fished, or those who are experts and want a new experience or to try out a different lure/bait.
"Borrow a rod and tackle from a friend or bring your own, buy a license, invite your friends and family, and take home memories and perhaps a delicious dinner from Fountain City Lake!"
