Open Streets Event: Appalachian Puppet Pageant to Parade Along Magnolia Avenue
The Appalachian Puppet Pageant, Knoxville's first giant puppet parade, will tour the Magnolia Avenue corridor from Chestnut Street to Randolph Street as part of the Open Streets Event on Sunday, May 21, 2017.
Put on by the Cattywampus Puppet Council, the parade will kick off at 2 p.m. and will feature new, elaborate puppets inspired by icons of Appalachia.
For example, this black bear will be dancing down the streets!
The new giant puppets were funded by a grant awarded to the Cattywampus Puppet Council by the Burning Man Global Arts Foundation.
"We hope to fill the streets with magic and wonder! Like Open Streets, we believe that play, art, and the sharing our our stories are integral to the health of our communities," said Rachel Milford, who founded the Cattywampus Puppet Council along with her friend, Shelagh Leutwiler.
The parade line up will begin at 1 p.m. at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Chestnut Street. Any one (no matter the age) are welcome to join. For more information, visit the
