Community Celebrates New Amenities in Sam Duff Park

Members of the South Woodlawn Neighborhood Association gathered in Sam Duff Memorial Park Saturday to celebrate the completion of an impressive information kiosk and a new trail connector for the park.

Mayor Rogero, Knox County Commissioner Carson Dailey, Assistant Neighborhood Coordinator Debbie Sharp, and City Parks and Greenways Coordinator Tim Hester joined the residents for the ribbon cutting.

The kiosk, situated near the park’s Hedgeapple Lane entrance, was a project pursued by the neighborhood residents. City officials helped point the group to a Tyler Chan, a local Eagle Scout from Bearden High School who was seeking a park project to complete.

Scott Tocher, a South Woodlawn resident, created the design for the kiosk and then Chan was able to build the structure from there. A group called the Wildlife Habitat of South Woodlawn planned the entire project, raising funds and even landscaping around the kiosk once it was completed.

A short trail extension was also recently completed in the park. The City’s new Greenways Service Crew built the trail with aid from the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club.

The mulch surface trail gives access to a wooded part of the park property that was previously inaccessible and creates a more convenient entrance to the park for residents coming from Greenwood Avenue.

Sam Duff Memorial Park, located at 4060 Chapman Highway, was originally part of the former Young High School and also features a 0.25-mlie walking track, football field, recently resurfaced tennis court, four new pickleball courts, restrooms, a large playground, and pavilions.
