Open Streets: Free Bike Rodeo, Free Helmet Giveway at South Knox Elementary

Kids will have the chance to enjoy a free bike rodeo and even receive a free bicycle helmet at Open Streets Knoxville this Sunday, May 20, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Open Streets Knoxville is organized by Bike Walk Knoxville and temporarily closes sections of various neighborhood streets each spring and fall to allow families the opportunity to “dance, bike, and play in the street.”

South Knoxville Elementary, located at 801 Sevier Ave., will host the bike rodeo in the school’s back parking lot. The school’s large playground and recess area for free play at the Open Streets Event.

“This is an opportunity for us to connect with the community and showcase some of our outdoor gardens—we have a bunch of stuff going on with our gardens!” said Tanna Nicely, Principal at the school, which serves students ages 4-12, pre-K through fifth grade.

The Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization is sponsoring the bike rodeo. The rodeo includes a series of skills stations that cover wearing a helmet, turn signals, following traffic signs, and stopping and starting. Children that typically participate in these rodeos fall in the 5-12-year-old range.

"This is always really fun for the kids because they're learning while riding a bike and it's in a fun environment," said Ellen Zavisca, TPO Principal Transportation Planner. "It's also a refresher opportunity for the parents."
