City Creating Greenways Ambassadors Program

Posted: 04/04/2022
Got a favorite City of Knoxville greenway? Willing to share your greenway enthusiasm with others?

The City is creating a Greenways Ambassador program, which was announced Saturday at the 2022 Neighborhood Conference.

The Greenways Ambassador initiative was developed by the Knoxville Greenways Commission, with support from the Parks and Recreation Department. The ambassadors will be volunteers who promote the use of the greenways and serve as a friendly resource of information to greenway users.

The City boasts more than 112 miles of greenways and soft surface trails, with about 54 miles of paved ADA-accessible greenways.

Let’s say someone is walking a greenway and has a question: How do I exit the greenway to reach a recreation center or a school? Or, which Knoxville Area Transit bus can I ride, and at which stop do I get off, to access a greenway? What trees am I looking at? What’s the history of a particular trail landmark?

These are the sorts of questions from greenway users that a Greenways Ambassador can answer. The ambassadors also will be picking up litter, promoting appropriate greenways etiquette, reporting trail conditions, providing basic assistance in the event of an emergency, and, if certified to do so, providing First Aid.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and are required to complete online training and spend a minimum of 1 hour on a greenway at least 4 times per month. Greenway Ambassadors can pick their greenway of choice and the times when they are volunteering.
