KPD Sgt. Rachel Britt Named December Officer of the Month

Posted: 03/04/2020
Sgt. Rachel Britt was one of five Knoxville Police officers honored as December 2019 Officers of the Month, during a ceremony held March 2, 2020, at KPD headquarters.

Sgt Rachel Britt On December 7, KPD patrol units were given a BOLO out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, stating that a female was being held against her will in a Motel 6 somewhere in or around the Knoxville area. Now Sergeant Britt took that information, which included a possible vehicle description, and proactively searched the local Motel 6 locations.

Upon arrival at the Motel 6 on Harry Lane Boulevard, Britt located a vehicle matching the description from the BOLO, checked with the clerk on duty and obtained a room number for the individuals.

Once additional officers arrived on scene, Britt and backup units conducted a knock-and-talk investigation at the room, locating a male in an intoxicated state as well as a female who appeared to be in a distressed state inside the room. The male was held pending the outcome of the investigation and the female victim confirmed that she had been held against her will in the room for hours.

The female victim stated that she and the suspect had been dating for approximately two years and on that day he had been drinking heavily and become argumentative. While preventing the victim from leaving, the suspect subjected the victim to numerous assaults, including burning her with a cigarette, throwing her against a wall and other acts of violence. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody and charged with domestic assault and false imprisonment.

Britt’s proactive work based on the limited information contained in the BOLO led to the arrest of a convicted felon and likely prevented further abuse to the victim, making her a worthy recipient of the December Officer of the Month award.
