Metro Drug Coalition Receives $250,000 from City of Knoxville

Posted: 12/09/2019
MDCMayor Madeline Rogero proposed and Knoxville City Council approved a one-time, $250,000 capital grant to Metro Drug Coalition for The Gateway, a planned recovery community center, at the December 3, 2019 City Council
meeting.

“The Gateway will provide an important service in our community to support individuals and families who have been impacted by substance misuse,” said Mayor Rogero. “The City is committed to working to address issues around addiction, including prevention, treatment, and recovery. Metro Drug Coalition is an important partner in these efforts.”

Based on research of effective models and a survey of community needs, MDC is creating The Gateway where those in recovery and their families can access support, counseling, and the resources they need to continue the recovery process. The center will enhance the connection between existing treatment resources and recovery support services, while providing a centralized location to coordinate access to services based on an individuals’ specific needs. It will provide support services for people experiencing long-term recovery from a substance use disorder. MDC believes this center is the key to unlocking our community’s endless possibilities for recovery services.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the leadership of Mayor Rogero and City Council in sharing the vision of The Gateway and the unique ways in which it will serve to have a lasting impact on the Knoxville community,” said Karen Pershing, MDC’s Executive Director. “MDC was chartered through a joint resolution of City and County officials in 1986 as a nonprofit agency and those partnerships have remained strong throughout our agency’s history.”

MDC is currently raising funds for this new initiative. As a nonprofit organization that is primarily grant funded, MDC is counting on the generosity of the caring people in the Knoxville area to help us create a safer, healthier community, free of substance misuse.
