The Inspections Unit is responsible for enforcing all city and state laws and regulations pertaining to businesses that have a beer permit, booting companies, taxis, and wreckers that are on the City of Knoxville’s wrecker rotation.
Part of this responsibility is preparing a report for the Knoxville City Beer Board for presentation at each Beer Board meeting. This report outlines any criminal or alcohol offenses a beer permit applicant may have had in the past. To insure those businesses that possess a city beer permit are operating within the law, officers of the Inspections Unit conduct numerous bar checks and periodically conducts underage compliance checks targeting sales to minors.
The Inspections Unit also coordinates the Knoxville Alcohol Sellers Training (K.A.S.T.) class. This class is held every Thursday of the month from 9:45 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Complex. The sign up sheet for the class is in the lobby of the Public Safety Complex at 8:00 a.m. The class is limited to 15 participants and it is first come, first serve. Class registration begins promptly at 9:45 a.m. and late comers will not be admitted to take the class. Call 865-215-7379 for more information about the class.
The Inspections Unit is responsible for the inspection of vehicles for hire such as taxis, limos, and shuttle buses. In addition, anyone who wishes to drive a vehicle in this category must come to the Inspections Unit and apply for a driver permit. All services are by appointment only. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 865-215-7379.
In addition to regulating alcoholic beverages and vehicles for hire, the unit also monitors the wrecker companies that are on rotation for the City of Knoxville.
