Go Big! Knoxville is a grant-funded program serving at-risk youth within the city of Knoxville. The Knoxville Police Department received the grant that sponsors this program in 2017, and thus the program began.

The objective of this project is to decrease crime rates amongst at-risk youth and to help prepare Knoxville’s at-risk youth to succeed as adults. The Knoxville Police Department seeks to reach this goal through its partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee, a community based mentoring program where volunteer “bigs” are matched with “littles” based on interests and aspects of their personalities. All “bigs” are interviewed by either the Knoxville Police Department or Big Brothers Big Sisters and must pass a background check in order to be matched with a little. These matches provide littles with a trusting, supportive relationship that will push them to become the best that they can be.

Currently, there are over 198 children and youth waiting for a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters offers a variety of different programs that volunteer mentors can participate in. The programs vary in commitment levels and reach students of all different ages. For more information on these programs, see www.tennesseebig.org/programs or contact Elizabeth Malone, the Volunteer Program Coordinator.

If you are interested in signing your child up for the program, please go to www.tennesseebig.org/enroll-a-child. From there, you will be contacted by a specialist at Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters, email Elizabeth Malone at [email protected]

This program is funded under an agreement with the State of Tennessee.
