Week 97: Drywall going up!
Lots of drywall is being hung and finished. Plumbing, duct work, variable air volume (VAV) HVAC boxes and conduit are being installed.

As 2021 draws to a close - and the tentative opening of the new Public Safety Complex in North Knoxville is now less than a year away - here are a few photos showing how the rejuvenated hospital buildings are shaping up:

The City is investing $55.8 million to reconstruct vacant office buildings on the former Tennova hospital site off Broadway, near Fulton High School, to serve as a combined complex for the Police and Fire Departments, Pension System and City Court operations.

Work on the redo of the vacated hospital site in January will hit its 100th week. The transformation of the site is expected to be wrapping up in late 2022.

Separate from repurposing five buildings, the City has invested $6.5 million to clear the northern end of the former hospital campus and raze the obsolete buildings there so that the tract is ready for reuse as part of a future private redevelopment.

That redevelopment will include the stately 1929 Building - the original St. Mary's building, which the City and its contractors have preserved and safeguarded.

Earlier this year, Lincoln Memorial University began offering nursing programs in the Magdalen Clarke Tower.

And the City and County will be jointly converting the 25,000-square-foot former St. Mary's Ambulatory Surgery Center on the south end of the site into an urgent care and behavioral health facility.

Among the work underway at the Public Safety Complex in December:

- In the Professional Office Building, which will house KPD and City Court operations, crews have been hanging drywall on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th floors.

- Electricians are pulling wire on the 5th and 8th floors, and Tennessee Automatic is setting sprinkler head brackets on the 5th floor.

- Del-Air's 5th floor plumbing has passed inspection.

- Service One is installing conduit in the elevator lobbies and in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor electrical rooms.

- In the Central Wing Annex, which will house KPD and Pension System operations, drywall is going up on the ground floor, as Tennessee Automatic is installing sprinkler heads on the ground and LL1 floors.

- Interstate Mechanical is installing VAVs on LL1 and plumbing on LL3, and Messer Construction is infilling holes in existing slabs and prepping slab pour-backs.

- In the Women's Pavilion, Messer is patching holes while Del-Air installs duct work, VAVs and roof drain cast iron.
