South Knoxville shooting investigation  
Update (Thursday, April 16, 4:28 p.m.) 
 
The suspect who was taken into custody on Island Home Avenue has been identified as Martez Wilson (DOB: 8/1/91) of Detroit, Michigan. Upon questioning, Wilson stated that he was stopped at the intersection of Cottrell Street and Anita Drive when a vehicle pulled up near him, someone fired numerous rounds from the vehicle and fled the scene. Wilson fled the scene on foot prior to being located by KPD officers on the South Knoxville Bridge. As officers attempted to make contact, Wilson discarded a handgun into the river before jumping off of the bridge and into the water in an attempt to elude officers. Shortly after, Wilson was taken into custody by responding officers on Island Home Avenue near McCormick Street. He has been charged with Felon in Possession of a Handgun, Destruction of Evidence and Evading Arrest. There are no other suspects in custody at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

At 10:34 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a shooting on Anita Drive near Cottrell Street. During their initial response, officers observed an individual matching the description of one of the involved parties walking on the South Knoxville Bridge. Officers confronted the suspect, who then jumped off the bridge and into the Tennessee River in an effort to elude arrest. Additional units responded to Island Home Avenue and took the suspect into custody without further incident near McCormick Street. The suspect sustained minor injuries during the incident and it is unknown at this time if those injuries were the result of the shooting. There are no other known victims and no additional suspects in custody at this time. Violent Crimes Unit investigators responded to scene to begin their investigation. Further details will be released as they become available.
