KPD to Begin 62nd Citizen’s Police Academy on April 23, Accepting Applications

The Knoxville Police Department is now accepting applications for the 62nd Citizen’s Police Academy, which will begin on Thursday, April 23, 2020.

The 12-week Citizen’s Police Academy, which will be held every Thursday night from 6:30-9:30 p.m., will feature a revamped curriculum intended to provide a complete and thorough understanding of how the Knoxville Police Department is organized and functions.

The academy will run every Thursday from April 23 through July 2, and also includes an extended Saturday range day and graduation on June 27. Classes will primarily be held at the Phil E. Keith Training Center located on Cement Plant Road in East Knoxville.

Classes will include the following topics: History of the Knoxville Police Department; Patrol Division overview; Interactive Special Teams overviews, including K-9, Negotiators, Crisis Intervention, Honor Guard and Bomb Squad; Management Services overview, including Training and Recruitment; Criminal Investigation Division operations; Intro to Forensics; Police Technology; and Internal Affairs and Police Advisory Review Committee.

The new curriculum is intended to create a much more interactive, engaging, and scenario-based experience for participants, who will get to take part in crime scene scenarios, negotiator scenarios, use of force simulations, a range day that will include firearms and driving training, and more. Academy members will also take a “field trip” to court at the City County Building and the Knox County 911 Center.

Graduates of the Citizen’s Police Academy will not only gain a complete understanding of the operations of the Knoxville Police Department and gain an appreciation for the daily challenges facing law enforcement professionals, but will possess the skill and desire to identify, recruit and mentor potential candidates for employment within the KPD or the Citizen’s Police Academy, demonstrate the enhancement of their observational skills and make a commitment to report any suspected criminal behavior, and possess the knowledge and information to serve as a participant in the decision making process for a variety of community policing initiatives.

For entry into the Citizen’s Police Academy, applicants must be at least 18 years old, live or work within the City of Knoxville, submit a completed application and undergo a background investigation to include a criminal history check.
