Knoxville Featured in Conference of Mayors Report on Climate Action
Knoxville is one of 35 cities featured in a new report from the U.S. Conference of Mayors called "
A Decade of Global Climate Leadership
." The report, released to coincide with the just-concluded global climate talks in Paris, details the efforts made by mayors across the country to address climate change and carbon emissions at the local level.
In Knoxville's city profile, Mayor Rogero writes, "I want Knoxville to lead our region in long-term planning for sustainability in the face of a changing climate. That means working closely with our neighbors to make smart decisions about how we grow, how we build, and what kind of technologies we invest in. The population of the Knoxville region is expected to increase over 40 percent by 2040. If we are careful with our decisions, we can embrace this growth while still meeting our emission reduction goals and building a better, more sustainable
community for our grandchildren."
Mayor Rogero has made sustainability a major focus of her administration, particularly through the efforts of the City's
Office of Sustainability
. She also served on President Obama's
State, Local and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience
. Last year, Knoxville was named a
Climate Action Champion
by the White House.
Among the other cities profiled in the report are Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and New Orleans.
