Downtown Parking Tip Sheet: Nov. 16
Here’s the latest in a weekly blog series from the City’s communication team to help you anticipate downtown events and parking opportunities.

Construction is well underway on the State Street Garage project that will add 570 parking spaces to downtown, meaning that this popular parking destination will fill up fast most days and evenings. We encourage you to download the Parkopedia app to see the availability of parking spaces at all City-owned and several privately owned downtown garages. Here's a step-by-step guide to the app. State Street, Market Square, Locust Street and Main Street garages have sensors and counters that display the estimated number of available spaces inside.

The block of South Central Street between Union and Clinch avenues remains closed, detouring travelers uphill on Union to the four-way stop at State. An adjusted traffic pattern there is now two-way, allowing drivers to turn left on State and continue to Clinch, where they can turn west toward Gay or east and return to Central.

You can avoid this area altogether by taking Hall of Fame Drive to Hill Avenue or Gay Street to Dwight Kessel Garage, First Presbyterian Church, etc. Another bypass idea to reach the south side of downtown is to take James White Parkway, exit onto Neyland Drive to Walnut to West Hill.

This weekend:

Friday: The ramp-up to holiday movie season begins this weekend with the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch. See show times for Regal Reviera 8 here

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performs a program titled Schumann’s Circle of Friends, 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre.

Former professional golfer and commentator David Feherty brings his comedy show to the Bijou Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Read about his interesting life experience in this News Sentinel article. Free parking is available nearby at the Dwight Kessel Garage located on the corner of East Hill and State Street.

WDVX’s Hillbilly Ball featuring Billy Strings is at 6 p.m. at The Standard. You can park in the lot at West Jackson Avenue for free after 6 p.m. on nights and weekends.

Saturday:  The last Market Square Farmers’ Market of the season is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Market Square. It’s a great time to purchase local produce, baked goods, meats and other items to serve at Thanksgiving. Avoid the disappointment of finding the Market Square Garage full and head straight to nearby Locust Street or Langley garages.

The UT Vols play Missouri at Neyland Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday: The Beach Boys bring their “Reason for the Season” Christmas tour to the Tennessee Theatre at 7 p.m. This show is sold out, so the State Street Garage will reach capacity quite early in the evening. This would be a good time to try an alternative garage, including Dwight Kessel, which has 946 parking spaces.

Country band The Band Perry performs at 8 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre.

Next week: City of Knoxville offices are closed on Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Check out these additional holiday-related schedule changes. Remember, Christmas in the City festivities kick off on Nov. 23, so anticipate lots of people coming downtown and State Street and Market Square garages likely filling up during prime hours.
