Council to Vote July 28 on KPD Body-worn Camera Contract

Posted: 07/22/2020
A proposed contract with the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Axon Enterprise Inc. to produce 350 new body-worn cameras and an accompanying 350 upgraded police cruiser cameras will come before City Council for its approval at Council’s Tuesday, July 28 meeting.

City Council is being asked to authorize Mayor Indya Kincannon to execute documents necessary to enter into a five-year contract with Axon Enterprise for approximately $4.9 million, with an option to extend the contract into future years. The contract covers ongoing operational costs.

“The community wants this, the Knoxville Police Department wants this, and we’re working hard to get this implemented as soon as possible,” Mayor Kincannon said.

The City of Knoxville evaluated proposals from seven vendors for upgraded in-car police vehicle cameras and new body-worn cameras for officers. A City evaluation team determined that Axon Enterprise’s proposal was the most responsive.

If approved by City Council, City staff will finalize and execute the contract. Camera installation would then be expected to begin this fall – possibly as early as September, depending on how quickly the final contract can be signed.
