Safety City Presented with Unit Award

Posted: 05/01/2019
Safety City UnitOn Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief Eve Thomas presented the Knoxville Police Department Unit Award to KPD's Safety City Team.

In December of 2018, KPD employees and officers assigned to Safety City presented the first annual “Safety City Christmas.” This new and exciting holiday event lasted for an entire month leading up to Christmas.

Beginning on November 30, Safety City opened to KPD employees and their families offering a festive atmosphere.  The grand opening to the public was held on December 8.  Families from throughout or city’s communities were able to stroll the grounds of Safety City while listening to holiday music and enjoy the abundance of festive holiday lights and decorations. Children were encouraged to drive the training cars around the track, make special crafts, and they enjoyed a model train display. Additionally, the East Tennessee Miniature Horse and Donkey Rescue brought a few furry friends along to visit with the kids!

All of this could not have been accomplished without the tireless efforts of the KPD Safety City team. As you can tell, this was no small feat, and a multitude of coordination was required to make this a successful event that saw over 2,000 people in attendance. Dozens of sponsors were required, volunteers were recruited and scheduled, and countless hours of planning went into making this a successful endeavor. All of this was accomplished by a relatively small core group of KPD employees whose dedication and enthusiasm helped showcase our Department’s commitment to our communities and the citizens we serve.
