Community Basketball Game: KPD vs. Safe Haven Gym June 29

Posted: 06/28/2017
A special kind of energy will be rocking the Cal Johnson Recreation Center gym Thursday night of June 29th when a team of KPD officers meet the young men of the Safe Haven Gym Program on the court for a unique game of basketball starting at 6 p.m.

The Safe Haven Gym Program, sponsored by the City of Knoxville’s Save Our Sons initiative, was introduced as a pilot project in 2016 at Cal Johnson Recreation Center to provide at-risk youth with a safe place to play basketball, attend leadership and life-skills workshops, hang out with friends and receive a hot meal. As part of the program, an officer with the Knoxville Police Department was on site during the evening activities.

“We are really proud of the results of the Safe Haven Gym Program,” said Senior Community Relations Director Avice Evans Reid. “Data from surveys taken from the young men showed improved perceptions towards KPD officers, strengthened relationships with KPD, increased opportunities for technical training, improved self-esteem and an increased opportunity for a safe space.

“This program has all the components that Save Our Sons looks for when identifying pre-enforcement strategies to reduce crime: positive interaction with law enforcement, collaboration with community partners such as Safe Haven Gym and Eternal Life Restoration Outreach, offering educational programs and providing a safe and fun activity.”

The Safe Haven Gym Program is held Tuesday and Thursdays, 6-8:30 p.m. through July 27, 2017.
