Crime Victim’s Advocates Work Lauded

Posted: 03/08/2017
Mayor Rogero, Carson, Chief RauschKnoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Chief David Rausch today named Brandi Carson the November Civilian Employee of the Month for the Knoxville Police Department.  Ms. Carson has been with KPD since August 2003.

Ms. Carson is assigned to the Special Crimes Unit where she often works with victims of domestic violence.  After her regular 40-hour work week, she does additional work for the Violent Crimes Unit where she serves as a crime victim advocate.  In that role her primary function is to contact victims and family members in order to provide timely communications about open homicide and sexual assault cases.

In November 2016, Brandi assisted Violent Crime investigators with a 4-year-old sexual assault cold case.  Over the months waiting for a lead to surface, Brandi helped calm the victim’s anxiety by answering questions and providing updates on the investigation.  Brandi had significantly improved the line of communication between the victim and the investigator.

Brandi worked with investigators and the Public Information Office to release additional information on the cold case including photos on the department’s social media.  That effort provided an important tip, which led investigators to identify the suspect.

Chief Rausch said, “Brandi’s ability to connect to crime victims and allowing investigators to focus more on solving the cases while utilizing the department’s broad social media reach, demonstrates her commitment to not only this department, but to the citizens we serve every day. Congratulations.”
