Ribbon Cutting & Open House Scheduled for Sept 21 at Historically Restored Building in Lakeshore Park

Posted: 09/14/2016
Lakeshore Park Admin BldgMayor Madeline Rogero, City Council, City officials and Lakeshore Park Board representatives will host an open house at 4 p.m. on Sept. 21 for the Lakeshore administration building, which recently underwent a $3.3 million historic restoration. The building is located in Lakeshore Park at 5930 Lyons View Pike.

The building now provides office space for Knoxville Parks and Recreation staff and one Lakeshore Park Board staff member.

The three-story structure, constructed in 1884, served as the administration building for the Lakeshore Mental Health Institute until it shut down in 2012. The institute’s land was combined with the City’s existing Lakeshore Park to form 185 acres of green space, sparking a $50 million public-private improvement plan for the park.

The City of Knoxville covered the expenses of rehabilitating the building, investing beyond the cost of a typical renovation so that the building’s history would be preserved.

The Lakeshore Park Board is pursuing private donations to fund the Lakeshore Park improvement plan.
