Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch today awarded the Life Saving Award to Knoxville Police Department Officer Stephanie Wilson. Officer Wilson has been with KPD since March 2005.
On July 30, 2016, at approximately 2:54 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call at 2411 Wilson Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene they located a large amount of blood in front of the house and a blood trail that led away from the house. As Officer Wilson was following the trail of blood the 911 Center received a call reporting a male suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds had shown up at a residence on Ulster Avenue.
Officer Wilson found the victim lying on the porch in a large pool of blood and suffering from major wounds to his chest and arm. Officer Wilson immediately advised Emergency Medical Services to step up their response due to the severity of the victim’s injuries.
Chief Rausch said, “Without hesitation Officer Wilson began packing large bandages into the victim’s chest wounds to slow the loss of blood. She then turned her attention to the male’s severely injured arm by applying a tourniquet to his upper arm.”
The victim was transported to UT Medical Center where he was immediately rushed into the trauma unit for treatment. The victim was able to be saved.
Chief Rausch said, “UT Trauma Center staff said that due to the severity of the victim’s wounds, the actions of Officer Wilson prolonged his life long enough until he was able to be transported to the trauma center for advance treatment.”
