CANCELED - Public Meeting Aug. 8 Regarding Bicycle Lanes On N. Broadway

Posted: 08/01/2016
THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELED & WILL BE RESCHEDULED AT A LATER DATE.

A public meeting will be held on Aug. 8 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (Fellowship Hall), 544 N. Broadway, regarding bicycle lanes on North Broadway.

Jon Livengood, the City’s Alternative Transportation Coordinator, will lead a public discussion on a proposal to restripe a six-block section of North Broadway between Jackson Avenue and Central Street to add bicycle lanes and improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

The current configuration – two southbound lanes and two northbound lanes, with no turn lane – would be restriped to make this section of North Broadway more functional for multiple transportation options. The proposed change calls for one northbound lane, one southbound lane and a continuous turn lane, with 5-foot buffered bike lanes on each side of the street.

The new configuration would make it safer for pedestrians to cross North Broadway while a turn lane would allow traffic to flow more efficiently, Livengood said.

Meanwhile, the bike lanes also would create a safer route for bicyclists commuting between North Knoxville and downtown or the University of Tennessee area, Livengood said. This key section of Broadway connects bicyclists with Central Street, which will be undergoing a $3.3 million streetscape and infrastructure upgrade, including bike lanes, between Magnolia Avenue and Woodland Avenue through 2017. Broadway also connects with the bicycle route through World’s Fair Park to access the UT area.

Anyone needing a disability accommodation to attend the Aug. 8 public meeting should contact the City’s ADA Coordinator, Stephanie Cook, at [email protected] or 865-215-2034. For an English interpreter, contact the City Law Department at 865-215-2050.
