KPD Recognizes Sergeant for Contributions to Reduce DUI’s

Posted: 03/09/2016
Rogero, Henard, RauschKnoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch honored Sgt. Sam Henard for his contributions to reduce the number of motorists who are driving under the influence.  Sgt. Henard has been with the department since March 2005.

On December 3, 2015, Sgt. Henard was awarded the “Outstanding Service Award” for East Tennessee by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).  The award is presented to an officer that excels in exhibiting compassion to drunken driving victims, partners with youth on underage drinking prevention, and takes a proactive approach to reduce DUI injuries and fatalities.

Chief Rausch said, “Sgt. Henard has been diligent in enforcing DUI laws and educating the public about the dangers of driving under the influence during his 11 year career with KPD.  As an advisor with the KPD Explorer Post, he teaches young men and women ways they can help educate their peers, which helps in the efforts to reduce DUI’s.  As the department’s liaison with MADD, Sam has helped raise more than $6,000, which is used to assist victims of DUI crashes.  But his commitment doesn’t stop there.”

Rogero, Henard, Ethan, RauschIn 2013, Sgt. Henard was the first officer on the scene of a tragic three-vehicle crash in South Knoxville.

Six-year-old Ethan Woodruff received critical injuries from the crash.  His father was tragically killed.  Their vehicle had been hit by a six-time DUI offender.

Sgt. Henard showed great compassion for this family and visited Ethan at UT Medical Center while he was still in a coma.  He visited him again months later while still being treated in a Children’s Hospital in Atlanta.

Even today Sgt. Henard keeps in contact with the family.

“We congratulate Sgt. Henard on receiving this prestigious award from MADD and thank him for his continued work to reduce DUI’s in our community,” Chief Rausch concluded.
