Officer Honored For Investigation Leading to Arrest of Robbery and Kidnapping Suspect

Posted: 08/13/2012
Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch named Officer Robert Satterfield the June Officer of the Month for the Knoxville Police Department. Officer Satterfield has been with KPD since September 2009. Chief Rausch said that on June 5, 2012, at approximately 6:44 a.m., Officer Satterfield responded to a Lovell Road motel to investigate a disturbance call. Once on the scene it was discovered that there had been a kidnapping and robbery in room 137. The male victim indicated he had been forced into his motel room, bound with duct tape, and was forced into the bathtub for hours as the suspect drained his bank account.

Chief Rausch said, "A possible suspect was identified through the officers' initial investigation. It was at that point that Officer Satterfield began a series of events that would lead to the arrest of the suspect."

Officer Satterfield initially began an exhaustive neighborhood canvas to every business in the immediate area. When the canvas failed to produce any real leads, Officer Satterfield called every taxi company in Knoxville to inquire if they had picked up a fare from the immediate area. One company had picked up an individual earlier that day and had transported the male to Nashville.

The cab driver indicated he had taken the passenger to a motel somewhere in Nashville that was located near a Hooters restaurant. The driver did not know what street, neighborhood, or the name of the motel.

Chief Rausch said, "Officer Satterfield began researching the location of all Hooters restaurants in the Nashville area then began calling every single motel that was even remotely close to them. After numerous phone calls, Officer Satterfield spoke to a motel clerk who indicated he had checked in that person earlier in the day and that he was currently standing in the parking lot."

Officer Satterfield immediately called Metro-Nashville Police and asked for their assistance by responding to the motel. The suspect, Bruce Clayton (DOB: 7-24-81), was located and taken into custody without incident. During an interview with Metro-Nashville investigators, the suspect admitted to the Knoxville kidnapping and robbery as well as a robbery in Nashville and a string of burglaries in both Nashville and Goodlettsville.

Chief Rausch said, "This was clearly an impressive investigative effort by Officer Satterfield. As a result of his actions, a suspect responsible for numerous crimes in several cities was removed from the street."

Mayor Rogero said, "We appreciate the outstanding effort of Officer Satterfield and congratulate him on a job well done."
