Fair Housing Workshop Highlights LGBT Rights

Posted: 09/26/2012
The City of Knoxville's Community Development Department will hold a workshop on Friday, Sept. 28th, to discuss fair housing issues, with an emphasis on the housing rights under federal law of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals. The meeting will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Cherokee Health, 2018 Western Ave.

Tara Davis, the City's Fair Housing Specialist, will discuss a rule released earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The rule forbids discrimination in any of HUD's core housing programs on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.

"Residents and managers of HUD programs may not be aware of the changes in the federal fair housing rules," Davis said. "This workshop will help explain the rules and answer any questions people have about rights and responsibilities."

Tracey McCartney, Executive Director of the Tennessee Fair Housing Council, will facilitate the workshop. The workshop is free and open to the public, but there is space for only 50 people.
