Community Band to Give Sunday Concert on Market Square

Posted: 06/08/2012
The Knoxville Community Band will hold a free concert Sunday, June 10, featuring music of Scott Joplin and Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as numbers with a bit of Spanish flair. The concert will be at 3 p.m. on Market Square, and is the second in a series of three outdoor summer concerts.

Joplin's ragtime two-step "The Entertainer" will be the first piece on the program. "Golden Age of Broadway" will feature music by Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers, including "Bali Ha'i," "Oklahoma," "Getting to Know You" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain."

Spanish numbers will include "Granada" and "Man of La Mancha," with recognizable pieces such as "Little Bird, Little Bird," "Dulcinea" and "The Impossible Dream."

The Knoxville Community Band is a volunteer group of musicians in the community, the majority of whom have been playing since grammar school. Some members are band directors who like to take time out from their own bands to keep in practice on their major instruments. Others come from all walks of life but share a love of music.

The band is sponsored by the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department. The group plays year-round at festivals and other special events, and performs a series of outdoor concerts during the summer. New members with expertise on any band instruments are welcome at any time. Practices are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays at Northwest Middle School off of Pleasant Ridge Road.

The last concert of the season will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at the Cove in Concord Park.
