Arrest of Homicide Suspect Earns Officers Award

Posted: 08/13/2012
Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch named Knoxville Police Department Officers Keith Lyon and Devin Hopkins the March Officers of the Month. Officer Lyon has been with the department since March 1994 while Officer Hopkins has been with KPD since July 2011.

Chief Rausch said that on March 30, 2012, at approximately 11:18 p.m., the E-911 Center received a hang-up call from a cell phone. The E-911 call processor called the number back and a male answered the phone. The male said he had killed someone and that police should come over before hanging up the phone again.

Chief Rausch said, "Once the name and address of the cell phone owner was obtained, officers responded to the Gap Road residence where they discovered a deceased female lying on the living room floor."

"Investigators were able to determine the name of a possible suspect and had that information broadcast to all officers," said Chief Rausch.

Once the name was broadcast to the officers, Officers Lyon and Hopkins immediately recognized the name as the same person they had conducted a field interview with the previous night. The officers returned to that area, which was near the Broadway Shopping Center and immediately began looking for the suspect. Officer Hopkins spotted the suspect walking with three other males on Broadway near Woodland Avenue and was able to detain the suspect without incident.

Chief Rausch said, "The actions of these officers enabled a rapid resolution to a homicide investigation and removed a violent criminal from the streets of Knoxville. These officers were able to accomplish this outstanding arrest by being consistent in their self-initiated activity."
