Vote for Knoxville's Boomsday in the Pepsi Refresh Project

Posted: 07/16/2010
Boomsday is competing nationally in the Pepsi Refresh Project and needs your vote to win! The Pepsi Refresh Project awards more than $20 million in grants to ideas Americans select in open online voting. These ideas are organized into six categories: Health, Art & Culture, Food & Shelter, The Planet, Neighborhoods and Education.

The Boomsday Going Green proposal is in the category for "The Planet" and its organizers hope to make the festival more eco-friendly by winning the grant from Pepsi.

Rachael Oberman, director of community outreach at the Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation, said with more than 400,000 people attending Boomsday each year, our community could help lighten our carbon footprint and help make Boomsday a leader in more ways than one.

"This grant will help make recycling easier for festival-goers and keep Volunteer Landing and Neyland Drive clean and environmentally friendly," Oberman said. "By recycling one ton of plastic, we could save almost eight cubic yards of landfill space."

The Boomsday Festival is the largest Labor Day weekend fireworks show in the nation. The free festival includes amusement games, children's activities, food, beverages, tons of vendors and live music.
